Regime forces launched a major military offensive in Aleppo using helicopter gunships, fighter jets, military tanks and rocket launchers, in a bid to wipe out the rebellion, which has seized control in more than half of the city during the last week. Rebels repelled these attacks and held their ground as heavy clashes occurred in the neighbourhoods of Forqan, Saladin, Sakhour, Hamadaniya and Arqoub. Shelling also targeted the neighbourhoods of Ansari, Aameriya, Mashhad, Ferdous, Bustan Qasir and the provincial towns of Kasibiya, al-Bab, Hardatin and Deir Haffer, leaving scores of people dead and many others wounded. Activists said that four military tanks defected to the rebels side in Aleppo.
Despite the military offensive, civilians took to the streets in several Aleppo neighbourhoods to condemn the regime’s brutal crackdown and to show solidarity with the rebels.
Syrian Consul to Armenia Mohammad Hafez defected to the opposition today, becoming the fifth senior diplomat to defect this month.
Regime forces also invaded the besieged Damascus suburb of Moadamiya after an hours-long bombardment that left more than 25 people dead and many others wounded. Meanwhile, regime forces massacred citizens in the Ommal neighbourhood in the city of Deir Azzour when they opened fire on vehicles carrying civilians trying to escape the shelling.
Regime forces killed more than 150 people today. Twenty-nine died as a result of the military attacks that targeted the Damascus suburbs of Moadamiya, Daraya, Abada, Erbin, al-Tal, Yalda, and Qutaifa in addition to one civilian shot dead in the neighbourhood of Qadam. Seventeen more were killed in the province of Deir Azzour—the majority in a massacre in the neighbourhood of Ommal. Nine were killed in the neighbourhoods of Central Daraa and Sabil in Daraa city and in its provincial towns of Ibtaa, Um Mayathen and Herak. Nine more died during heavy clashes in the neighbourhood of Qarabis in Homs city and in the provincial towns of Qasir and Rastan. Ten were killed in the military offensive carried out in the towns of Habitt, Sarjeh, Ma’arrat Noman and Saraqeb in the province of Idlib. Twelve died in the neighbourhood of Dabagha in Hama city and its provincial towns of Latamna, Madiq Fortress, Tuweina and the village of Asharneh. Four more died on Latakia-Aleppo road in the province of Latakia. At least 35 army soldiers were killed during clashes with rebel fighters throughout the country.
Regime forces continued attacks on the Damascus suburbs of Saida Zainab and Qatana, where they carried out massive sweeps and arrest campaigns. They also burned down a number of houses, some of which were being used as field hospitals. The regime also continued shelling the neighbourhoods of the Old City and Khaldiya in Homs and its provincial towns of Rastan, Houleh, Ghanto, Saan and Krak des Chevaliers, in addition to a number of villages in the southern suburbs. It also continued assaults in the villages located in Akrad Mountain and Salma resorts in the suburbs of Latakia, as well as in the Daraa suburbs of Sheikh Maskin, Harrah and Lajat district. The regime carried out a sweep of the village of Rafeid in the province of Qunaitera.
Rebels arrested more than 100 army soldiers in Aleppo, 50 in Idlib—including 14 officers—and more than 40 in Damascus.
